Found: One Pair of Perfect Boots

If you read my post on Friday, you would know I spent the day shopping yesterday with two of my closest friends. The weather was rainy, cold, windy and just nasty, but we didn’t care. We were on a mission, a mission we set out on 3 times a year - to find that perfect something.

Every fall for the past few years (okay maybe five years), I have set out to find a great pair of boots to wear with jeans or long skirts. And every fall I have come up empty handed. Boots are typically not cheap and if I am going to part with $100 or more, they are going to have to be some boots!  I have looked high and low. I have said no to so many potential pairs of boots, it’s not funny. My 8 year old daughter says I’m too picky. It had become a joke between my daughters and my good friends, because I always say I am going to buy a pair of boots and end up walking out of the store empty handed. Until yesterday.

My new bootsI found the perfect boots! And, I bought them. They are a rich chocolate brown leather and suede mix. Simple, but just enough detail to add interest. Not too dressy, not too casual. Not too young looking, a little bit sassy, and nothing an old lady would wear. The heel is a tad bit higher than I had originally planned on, but looked perfect with my favorite jeans. I even took a picture of them for you!

The day was deemed a success after our first store, not only because I bought some kick-a$$ boots, but because “J” was convinced that a hot pair of deep red Anne Klein pumps were a better bet than the boring black ones. That is the fun of shopping with “A” - having spent all but the past 12 years of her life in Europe, she just has a sense of style about her and she is so good about getting us all to go beyond our comfort zones.

We shopped and shopped, then poured our weary legs back into the car and headed back to our own little neck of the woods for dinner. We opted for Indian as “A” and I really wanted Chicken Korma. It was so awesome and really hit the spot.

I can’t wait for January when we get to do this again in honor of “A”s birthday. I treasure these 3-time-a-year days with my friends, the memories are so wonderful!

Working for the Weekend and Going Shopping with the Girls!

Whew! That is a long title! Anyhow, it’s Friday, the sun is shining, I’m listening to party tunes on Virgin Radio, and all is good.

My good friend “A” just called as I was getting ready to drop “Queenie” off at Preschool. She was looking for a good excuse to visit a few new area stores and wanted an accomplice. I was so proud of myself. I told her no. I am working this afternoon so I can have a guilt-free weekend and I am saving my pennies for Sunday.

Sunday, my two close friends (”A” and “J”) and I are having a girls shopping day. This day happens three times a year (in conjunction with our birthdays) and we often contemplate adding to our group so we can sneak in an extra day. We love these shopping days, because they have such great memories attached to them.

It is always more fun to shop with your pals. We are brutally honest with each other - telling each other what looks good, what doesn’t and what is not worth it. We challenge each other to try something new, something out of our shopping comfort zones. And the biggest rule that needs enforcing - no shopping for the kids on this trip.

Afterwards we usually go for an early dinner at a restaurant and chat about our purchases, tell silly stories and generally enjoy each other’s company.

So, back to work I go! Have a great weekend and I’ll come back Monday and tell you what we got!

Coming out of the Fog - My Migraine Account

Let’s just say that I am not thankful for everything I inherited from my parents - headaches being one of them.

Tuesday morning I woke up to a gray, dreary sky, and the beginnings of the headache from hell. I wanted to just climb back in bed when it hit me - I am a mom and the kids were off school that day because of elections. Ugh.  Thinking that all I needed was a good cup of coffee to jump start my morning, I make my cup of coffee, ask the kids to keep it down and try to get started on my to do list.

As the day goes on, my ability to think clearly steadily erodes. My head starts to pound louder and louder - to the point where my teeth HURT. I take some medicine, knowing full well that it is not going to make this thing go away, but that it may knock it back a level or two. I just need to make it through the day.

I manage to go vote and get my son to hockey. I can’t bear the thought of dealing with food, so I take the kids through the Chick-Fil-A drive through on the way home. Knowing that I got nothing accomplished in my office during the day, I try again after the crew is in bed. I managed to read a few blogs, update a page here and there, but that was it. I was toast.

Wednesday had to be a better day, right? Wrong. This thing was in full swing and my stomach was churning, eyes were throbbing, and I just couldn’t think. Nothing helped, nothing at all. I got the big kids off to school and pleaded with the youngest to minimize the babble and the noise.  Anything I managed to get done for clients was stuff that required no major thought - an update here and there, but no creativity.

There was no real food in the house and I knew I had to make a run to the warehouse store. I alternated between feeling like I was going to hurl and feeling like I was going to pass out as I made it through the aisles. Next I had to do the afternoon duties of picking up kids and getting to afternoon activities. All I know is that my body does a great job on auto-pilot when my brain is in such a deep fog.

Once everyone was settled I made my tea, relaxed for a few minutes and poured myself in bed. About 1 a.m. I woke up, drenched in sweat from head to toe and I felt like a million bucks! The headache from hell broke. I slept great and when I woke up this morning the fog had lifted.

I am still dealing with the migraine hangover - my eye sockets feel like they are full of sand and the stomach is still not right, but at least I can THINK!

VOTE Today!

VOTE - it is your right! Would you like the right to gripe for the next few years? Then get out and vote today. If you do not take a few minutes out of your day and exercise your freedom as a US citizen and vote today, then you have given up your right to complain, rant, or express disbelief in what the politicians are up to. You have a voice - use it. It doesn’t matter to me who you vote for. I know who I am voting for and I’m not telling. I will cast my vote today, and if things go in my favor, great. If not, I have the right to complain until the next time I get a choice.

So, did you vote today? If so, leave me a comment and I’ll add you to the list of those who did! (Think of it as a free link to the blog/web site of your choice).

Thankfully I Work From Home

November is one of those months where many people reflect on things they are thankful for. Well, today is a day where I am truly thankful that I work from home as my own boss! I relate my work day today to a piece of swiss cheese - full of holes! Check out this schedule below and you’ll understand what I mean!

  • 6:30 - get up, coffee, work on time sensitive project for client
  • 7:30 - get kids ready for school and self ready for day
  • 8:30 - check email and follow up on a few things
  • 9:00 - be at school for 3rd grade Accelerated Reader awards ceremony (yeah M - you read the most books in your class)
  • 9:45 - bank, gas, then return to office
  • 10:15 - return emails and follow up with calls
  • 10:45 - back to school for 5th grade awards ceremony (yeah N - lots of awards for you - top AR, honor roll, etc)
  • 11:30 - back to office to write this post and on to other work
  • 12:45 - take youngest to preschool
  • 1:30 - back to office - hope I can get something done
  • 3:15 - back to school to pick up big kids, then to preschool to get the youngest, then off to afterschool activities

I honestly don’t know how I would do it without the flexibility working from home provides. It is crazy some days, but the look on my daughter’s face when she received her award and saw me in the crowd, makes it all worthwhile, and that is something to truly be thankful for.

What are you thankful for this season? This post is part of a Blog Carnival hosted by Holiday Ideas. Come share your holiday ideas, too.
