Silver Highlights

So, I just got back from the hair dresser.  The hair was getting a little wild and needed to be reined in. Like all good hairdressers, mine immediately asked if I wanted to get color done today as well, you know, to cover up the gray hairs.

I told her that I would like to just keep my silver highlights instead!

I have decided to make peace with the fact that I am getting older, my hair is starting to get gray and coloring it with chemicals (that I react to every time) is no longer the solution.

Who else has silver highlights? Show of hands?

Tackling Monday Head On

Monday MotivationNormally I do a Menu Plan Monday post, but this week has two out evenings already planned, there are plenty of leftovers, and my family may just have to fend for themselves.

Instead, I am tackling my procrastination this week. Taking my cue from Wendy at eMomsAtHome, I am making my Monday Motivation post. Here are a few things I MUST accomplish today:

  • Post meet results
  • Put final edits/tweaks on a client site
  • Have a conference call with another client
  • Post at Essential Keystrokes and Weary Parent
  • Clear out at least 25 messages from my inbox

Sounds easy doesn’t it? Factor in there that my kids are on a two hour delay for weather, then I have to take the youngest to preschool at 1:00 and then I have to leave for afternoon pickups/gymnastics at 3:30. Starting to look like a swiss cheese kind of day.

I’ll be back throughout the day to mark off what I have gotten done.

And My Oscar Pick Is…

CarsI know the movie world is all abuzz this evening with the 79th Annual Academy Awards show coming up. I went to check out who was nominated for what and realized that I am a very sad case. Of all the movies nominated, whether for its main actor, actress or other stellar quality, I have only seen ONE. That’s right, ONE.

So, my vote for best (animated) picture of the year is Cars. How could you resist those googly eyes, subtle humor, and syrupy sweet story line?  Lightning McQueen and ‘Mater have such unique on screen chemistry!  I wonder what they’ll wear to the show tonight???

The Brownie Vest

brownie vest

One of the things on my procrastination list has been getting all the patches on my daughter’s Brownie vest. She joined Brownies in September and has been on my case ever since about getting her all the gear (which they never wear anyway). In January I conceded and bought her the vest.

Today was supposed to be the day her troop celebrated Thinking Day. An activity that would involve 200 Brownies from the area, meeting at the library, sharing cookies, and doing thinking activities. My deadline was now set. My daughter has been on my case every day about this vest. She wanted those patches on there so she could wear this vest for Thinking Day.

I kept putting it off – missing that Martha gene you know – as some of the patches had to be sewn on. When I woke up this morning, her lovely little face was above mine, bringing me a friendly reminder that she needed this done – and now. I bargained with her – I just wanted to get my coffee first (otherwise the badges were bound to be crooked) and she conceded. While sipping slowly on my coffee, she hauled out the ironing board, iron, unwrapped all the badges and set up everything.

Just as I was sewing the last patch on, the phone rang. It was her troop leader. Thinking Day has been canceled due to the ice and snow we are receiving right now. It just figures. I proudly told the leader that I was just finishing up the last badge, and she revealed to me that she had not even started on her own daughter’s vest yet. Now I don’t feel so bad!

The Two P’s Have Got Me In Their Grips!

Stop ProcrastinatingWhat am I talking about??? The two P’s – Procrastination and Perfection.

These two words are going to be the end of me if I don’t figure out how to tackle them head on day in and day out. Some days I have a handle on them and other days, they rule me.

Procrastination has haunted me since I was a child. I have always figured that I just work best under pressure. The truth is, that I work best when I just get it done! For some reason, that just doesn’t seem to sink in when dealing with the more mundane tasks in life. It is hereditary – of that I am sure. My daughter gets a project at school and immediately gets it done, whereas my son (& I) will leave that thing to the night before.

Perfection is the other one. My attitude (which I know is so wrong) is that it is either perfect or not worth doing. Unfortunately, this way of thinking has affected my perception of housework – why do it – the kids will mess it up shortly. And my attitude towards fitness and weight loss – I don’t have the time to workout that I did when I was single and skinny – so why bother. And these are only two of the many facets of my life that are affected.
If I know these two P’s are so bad for me mentally, why, why, don’t I throw them to the curb? Any ideas? Strategies? Words of encouragement?
