Casual Friday the 13th

Casual FridaysFridays are pretty relaxed around here. I just open up the comments for the whole day and you are welcome to join in the conversation at any time and in any way you please.

You aren’t scared of Friday the 13th are you?  Does the fact that today’s date is 07/13/07 mean its luckier than the other Friday the 13th’s? You bet it does! Why, because today is my birthday and 3 times 13 equals 39 and that is how old I turn today.

Since today is such a wild and wacky day, let’s talk about superstitions, Friday the 13th trivia, strange birthdays, and really anything else you want to discuss. And since the topic of movies always comes up - No, I have never seen any of the Friday the 13th movies.

And all the virtual birthday cake is on me! So grab your cup of coffee and take a few minutes just for yourself and join us.

Thanks to some great friends for making last week’s Casual Friday fun! Eliza, Gayla, Laura, Randa, Dana, Yvonne,  Lucy,  AgentSully , Neena, Amanda, Phil, Jane, Doris and Ariane.

The Unexpected Kindness of Others

What started off as a visit to the doctor’s for a possible UTI on Monday quickly escalated into a very scary night of high fevers, vomiting, and dehydration for my five year old daughter, Miss N. We returned to the doctor’s office on Tuesday morning and they sent us to the ER almost immediately. The infection had reached her kidneys and she needed to be put on an IV for antibiotics and fluids.

Miss N is absolutely terrified of needles and the fact that the ER doctors had to draw blood and then put in an IV pretty much sent her into a frenzy.

While waiting for the staff to get everything together for the blood draw, etc., a hospital volunteer arrived in our room with the most adorable pink and purple, handmade frog lovey (not quite a pillow, not quite a stuffed animal) for Miss N. Her eyes lit up and my filled with tears. It was exactly what she needed at that moment in time. Since she received her frog, it has been clutched by her side through poking, prodding, tests, and sleeping in a less than comfortable hospital bed.

Today she is feeling significantly better and if all goes as planned, we can go home tomorrow. As I type this, she is sitting up in her bed playing with the frog she got from the wonderful volunteers. The frog is providing more comfort and entertainment than the TV or crayons.

I have been most impressed by the wonderful treatment she has received from all the nurses and doctors, but the unexpected gift of a lovey, handmade by a volunteer has been the most touching event of the past few days.

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers. Your kindness has made one little girl much more comfortable during her stay.

Menu Plan Monday - July 9

monday-menu-4.jpg

I knew that if I skipped Menu Planning last week that I was doomed. And I was, but with it being such a funky week anyhow, it just didn’t matter. This week is going to be crazy and if I don’t do my planning, it could get ugly. My son is doing ice hockey camp from 9-4 each day this week, my middle daughter has gymnastics 3 mornings and Friday afternoon, I teach gymnastics 3 mornings, and my youngest is going to art camp from 9-3 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In other words, I will be driving my taxi service all week. I really don’t mind, because these are all activities they enjoy and do with friends - and isn’t that what summer is all about?

So, the menu has been planned and we did the grocery shopping yesterday.

  • Monday - Hamburger Helper and a Salad (my son’s choice - I’ll stick with the salad)
  • Tuesday - Kielbasa sausage, pierogies, and steamed veggies
  • Wednesday - Catalina Taco Salad
  • Thursday - Tropical Chicken Foil Packets on the grill with rice
  • Friday - it’s my birthday and I’m not cooking. We’ll probably go out.

777 - Is it your lucky day?

It’s 7-7-7

Today is 07/07/07 and I just couldn’t help myself! Do you feel lucky today?

This is the slot machine that we have in our garage (don’t ask why!) and we have gotten it to line up 777 a few times for us. The great part about this machine is that it takes “slugs” so we don’t have to feed it real money - on the flip side, it doesn’t pay out real money either.

Have a great weekend!

Casual Friday - Is it really Friday?

Casual FridaysI don’t know about you, but the 4th of July right smack in the middle of the week has done a number on my schedule and my brain! In a way it has felt like a few Fridays since we got together last week. Both of our parties were huge successes and I am so happy to have a nice calm Friday in front of me.

The question this week is how are you making time for YOU this summer? I know many of us are juggling new schedules with kids home for the summer, vacations, trips to the pool, outings with the family and we are still working.  I am really struggling with this one and find myself getting very short with my family if I don’t get enough time to recharge. Let’s talk! Join in the conversation by leaving a comment below.
