On our way home from a birthday party my daughter was at, the conversation in the car turned to watermelon. I was telling my daughter that I had chopped up a whole watermelon and that we also had ice cream in the freezer. Her initial reaction was “watermelon on ice cream – eewww” and I tried to convince her of its goodness.
In trying to convince her I remember Sundays growing up. Each Sunday morning my Dad would get up and make waffles from scratch. Every Sunday. He did it so my Mom could sleep in a few extra minutes before getting up for church. Sometimes the waffles were tinted pink, blue, or green. Sometimes he mashed up bananas and sometimes they were just plain. But, we always had them. It became a tradition.
After breakfast we would go to church. In the summers after church we would have another tradition. My Mom would chop up whatever fresh fruit we had or open a jar of her homemade canned peaches and we would have fruit and ice cream for lunch. That was the entire meal. My Dad always said it was too hot for anything else, but we know now, it was just an excuse to get us all hooked on his favorite indulgence.
I have such clear memories of these traditions and love Sundays for it. As a matter of fact, I plan on making waffles for my kids this morning.
Were there any family traditions from your childhood that always bring back good memories? Have you started any with your own kids?Â

To all the Moms who give the hugs, make the dinner, fold the laundry, check the homework, fix the boo-boos, drive to endless sports practices, make the cookies for school, change the diapers, calm the fears, give the good night kisses, read the books, enjoy the tea parties, dry the tears, say I love you, rock the babies, sweep the floors, and do all the things that Mommies do – THANK YOU!
Have a Happy Mother’s Day!

Traditions are the glue that hold many families together. I’m not sure how so many of them start, but they do and often take on a life of their own.
Our Mother’s Day tradition is one I look forward to each year. On the Saturday before Mother’s Day, my husband takes the kids and they visit my Mom’s nursery and pick out my annuals for the garden. On Sunday morning I get breakfast in bed and then get the whole day to putter in the garden, plant all the beautiful colors, and give my flower beds a fresh outlook on life.

I just took this picture of my side flower beds. All of the perennials are back and looking good. All it needs now are some bright daisies, wave petunias, celosia, and impatients.
What are your Mother’s Day traditions? Do you get breakfast in bed? Go out for lunch? Do your kids make you something special? Or is it just another day in “paradise” as they say?

Clear blue skies. A sunny warm afternoon. A date with my husband. No kids. A drive through the country. All in a little red corvette – complete with the top down.

What more could a girl ask for?
Not a whole lot. We got a rare afternoon away from the crew. Yesterday was my sister-in-law’s birthday and we decided to take her out to lunch at our favorite German restaurant today. We have to drive an hour through Virginia horse country to get there – it was absolutely beautiful.
We ate too much, laughed a lot, told stories, and enjoyed every minute of it. A date with your spouse – I highly recommend it!
