Gift Ideas for the Work At Home Mom

So I get to work from home in my slippers, that doesn’t mean my office doesn’t want to be chic!! Every year my family asks what I want for the holidays and every year they seem a bit astonished that I want stuff for my home office - after all, it is where I spend so much of my time!!

Here some items I have on my list this year:

Pepper Pot File FoldersSee Jane Work - Okay Santa - anything from See Jane Work will be just fine with me. How about some yummy Pepper Pot file folders, desktop files, or an Internet Notes black book?

TheGreenOffice.com - I love the tree-free stationery - the Harvest Collection is so nice.

My laptop needs some spunk!! I would love a Pacific Design Kailo Chic Laptop Sleeve or a cool laptop skin (I could design my own) from Schtickers.

I am determined to get even more organized in the new year so a new Brother PT-1880 Advanced Deluxe Labeler for Home & Office would be very welcome.

How about some new essentials like the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop (keyboard and mouse) or an ergonomic 3M Gel Wrist Support.

We don’t live very close to a Starbucks or coffee shop and I love to start my day with a perfect cup of coffee. A few years ago, my husband gave me the Keurig B60 Special Edition Gourmet Single-Cup Home-Brewing System and it makes the BEST coffee ever. More of the Newman’s Own Organics Extra Bold Special Blend, K-Cups would always be welcome, too.

Do you work from home? What is on your wish list?

Notes from the Road

I am on vacation this week - thus the lack of new information on this site!  We decided to take a trip to my husband’s home town of Pittsburgh, but give it a bit of a tourist twist.

Since we live a bit out in the country, we always love staying in high rise hotels in cities whenever we can. We woke up this morning to thunder and lightning - it sounded so different bouncing off high rise hotels rather than our trees at home. When we finally got going we had decided to go to the Pittsburgh Zoo instead of the Carnegie Science Center. Let’s just say we made a great decision! The zoo wasn’t crowded and we enjoyed seeing all the animals. About 10 minutes after we left the zoo another round of storms came through and it was bad. The Science Center was hit during the storm and windows were blown out on the 4th floor. Did I say that I am glad we went to the zoo?

Anyhow, power is out all over the place here and roads are flooded. We are north of the city visiting with relatives right now. I am glad that I packed the laptop and even more glad that I have a Verizon wireless broadband card. It was the only way we could watch the news this evening.

Hope you are having a great evening and I’ll be back to my regular posting schedule shortly. Back to our adventure of a vacation!

Oh, and I won’t be hosting Casual Friday tomorrow - maybe HomeMom3 can have it at her place instead. It’ll be back next week.

Vacation Planning at the Last Minute

Are you part of a family that plans out vacations well in advance? Do you research rates, hotel recommendations and map out your activities? That would just make too much sense for this family!

We are planning on taking a few days vacation this week, but up until a few hours ago, we didn’t know when we were leaving, where we were going, or where we were going to stay!! The lack of planning always stresses me out, but looking back on past trips that were formulated on the fly, we always have fun.

A few years ago we waited until the week before to plan our trip to Orlando and we lucked out BIG time. We were able to stay at the Hilton Grand Vacation Club near Disneyworld - a two bedroom suite that slept 6 (we had my cousin with us) was only $150 a night - a steal for what we got. The resort was gorgeous and we had a great time.

Then there was the year that we were supposed to go to Florida and they got a hurricane or three. Instead we headed aimlessly towards Hershey, PA and spent a day there enjoying Hershey Park then headed up toward Mystic, CT. That was a lot of fun until I broke my ankle, but hey, what’s a vacation without some drama?

Last year we decided to go to New York City at the last minute and ended up with a great rate at the Doubletree in Times Square. The girls and I lived it up at the American Girl Place while the boys took in fire stations, the Intrepid museum and Ground Zero. We stopped at the Borgata in Atlantic City for a night on the way home and then Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

And what about this year? We finally decided we are going to Pittsburgh. We have family there but we are going to stay downtown this time so we have easy access to the zoo, the science center, and such. Who knows what other adventures we’ll find along the way? We always manage to have fun.

Sharing Words of Wisdom

This week has been super busy and it is only Tuesday! Fortunately for me, some of my favorite blogs have been touching on some of the challenges I am facing as I navigate through this summer trying to balance growing my business while working from home with spending plenty of quality time with my kids.

A few posts I highly recommend:

Want to be successful? Learn to manage expectations. Randa Clay has reminded me of a very important business strategy - managing client expectations. I can’t think of a more important business princple than this during summer. Apart from the time constraints of having kids home, there are things like summer vacation (for you and your client), holidays, and the generally slower pace of business in the summer.

What you want may be different than what you will settle for. Is Wendy talking to me? Uh, maybe! Balancing a successful business with being a successful Mom is a constant push and pull scenario. Wendy reminds us to take stock of our goals and the goals of those around us and to make sure that we are not just settling because it is the most comfortable route at the time.
