My Adsense Tip for Personal Blogs

My Tip For YouWhen it comes to monetizing your blog, one of the easiest methods to set up is Google Adsense. However, if you have a “Mommy Blog” or other personal blog where the topics run the gamut, you may have trouble getting relevant ads to show consistently.

When I redid this blog, I decided to test something. I removed all the Google Adsense ads from the main page. Instead, I placed a block of ads at the end of the post on single pages and below the comment box.

Guess what? The ads being served on the individual pages are much better targeted to the content of the post. Not rocket science, I guess, but why did it take me so long to figure that one out? More and more of the traffic to this site is coming from search engines - and the pages those visitors are landing on are the single pages. With the ads being higher quality, the click through rate has also increased - dramatically.

What do you think? What techniques have you used that have shown a positive increase in your Adsense earnings? Leave me a comment and let me know.

That’s a great idea! Plus, it gives people who hate ads a chance to read your front page without leaving instantly, and if they like the content they may stay anyway.

I may have to implement this on my blog, Char, thanks very much!

Hi Char! This topic looks familiar :-) You idea is a very good, but the problem some may have is that most users never leave their home pages. If you have to serve ads on your home page, maybe stick with non-contextual there, and leave the Adsense for the single pages where you may have more faith in the results?

Yes, it is familiar - after I left the comment on your blog I went for a walk and decided it would make a good post.

The majority of the readers who come to my main page are not going to click on Adsense ads anyhow. The readers who find my single pages because they are searching for Kipling bags, photos of Ireland, the Slowsky commercials or other more specific topics get the ads that are more relevant to their search.

I am working on other ad types for the main page. I recently gutted this site and am rebuilding it more carefully - one piece of the puzzle at a time.

Thanks for coming by and your insight is welcome! I am glad I discovered your blog - and your wife’s is a definite read now. I can also be found at b5’s http://www.wearyparent.com.

Hi Char, one of the things I read is that you can place adsense below the comments on the home page instead of on the single page. CTR seems higher.

I like this idea, however my entire article/blog shows up on the first page. The only reason they would ever see them if they were on a seperate page is if they were leaving a comment. You wouldn’t by chance know how to do like a teaser, so they would have to click through to read the article would you? Thanks for the tip, the other thing I’ve thought of doing is staying on topic for a couple of days…that use to do the trick.

I like the redesign of your site. This is an interesting idea. I’d like to see more research of this type.

Thanks Laura. I think it really depends on the type of blog you have and what your goals are. I’ll be monitoring the results of my research here.

Hi good suggestion, learned about you from my pals doris and wahseh! Good blog you have!

Bokjae - thanks for stopping in and the kind words.

Interesting concept. I hadn’t realized it. But you’re right. My Adsense ads seem to be relating directly to my blog topic, not so much to my post topics. Hmm.

I haven’t gotten around to getting rid of my ads on the front page, but have been planning it for a while. Nobody every clicks on them. It is totally not worth the space they are taking up.

  Char wrote @ March 28th, 2007 at 10:49 am

Mike - since I have removed the home page Adsense ads from this blog my CTR has increased - mostly due to search engine traffic.

Thanks for stopping in!

[…] you check the front page you will find no more adverts. I’m trying out Char’s tip for three reasons. Firstly, to try and serve more relevant ads on each post page as Char has found […]

I have a real novice question - I’m using typepad and if I put adsense at the bottom of my post (near the comments like you suggest) I’ll have more than the 3 google adsense links that are allowed on my main page. I have 10 posts per page on my main page (mainly because typepad doesn’t have pagination). Does anyone know a workaround using typepad or any suggestions? I guess I should just switch over to wordpress but I’m scared lol. I hope this makes sense!
Thanks!
Deb

Thanks for the tip. I’m just getting started with my site: American English Doctor. It focuses on parents who want to monitor their children’s literacy from beginning reading through high school.
