Friday was the first day of summer vacation for my kids so I let them sleep in, slack off, play with friends, and have their first sleepovers of summer. Starting tomorrow, the freeloading is over! While I don’t expect my kids to work the day away, they are all certainly old enough to help out and they need to learn these things anyhow.

I have created a fun chart in Microsoft Publisher that I will update weekly. The chart has each child’s picture, a rotating job of the week (one that has to be done daily), and one major chore each week day - with one “free” day each week. The rule will be that before friends can come over or we leave for an outing, these things must be done. None of the chores should take more than 10 minutes anyhow. UPDATE: This summer chore chart has been revised using MS Word - get the new version of the summer chore chart. This would also be a fun project done on construction paper, draw lines for the grid with a ruler and let the kids cut out chore pictures from magazines.

Char, again I am seriously impressed! Thanks — I will give it a try. We are having a very lazy Sunday, just trying to rouse the troops to clean bathrooms & gather the laundry…
Have a great week,
Sherri

Thanks Sherri! My kids always seem more cooperative when there is some form of a plan in place - not just random stuff Mom is asking them to do.
Enjoy your week, too!

Una and Lynn - I will email you the file. The file is zipped so you need to right click on it and save, then use WinZip to open it.
If anyone else is having problems, let me know.

Ha - love it! but I can’t get the file either
How old are your children? When did they start cleaning the toilet?
Char wrote @ June 12th, 2007 at 10:30 am
All - I added the MS Publisher file to the page - hopefully this will work for you. Remember to right click and save - otherwise you will get the page not found error.
Lucy - my kids are 10, 8 and 5. They just wipe down the toilet seat with a Clorox wipe and use the toilet brush inside the toilet real quick. I still have to go back over it once a week and do it right, but anything is better than nothing.

Jeanna - I just emailed you.
I’m not sure why the chart is not downloading correctly! If you are having trouble with it, leave me a comment and I will email it directly to you because that seems to be working fine for everyone.

Jeanna - I tried emailing you and it was returned to me. Leave a comment using another email address and I’ll try again. Don’t worry - no one sees the email addresses but me.

Char- I came across your super chore chart idea while browsing to create my own…..I am so excited to get one created for my 6 and 4 year old girls! I am hoping the chart will provide the “self starter” in each of them so that I do not have to be the one to remind them so much to initiate their “special jobs.” Would you please email me your chart as well? Thank you so much for sharing- I really appreciate it! Have a great day!

Those of you with internet-loving kids could also try a service that offers both printable and online chore charts. I work with Handipoints.com and think it’s a good service, but there are a number of other good ones out there as well.
Can’t match the personalization of your chart though, wow.

could you please send me a copy of your chore chart? My husband thinks our kids are to young to learn how to help do anything which ofcourse makes it 10x more difficult for me. I know I will still need to do it again but I can teach them when while they are little that it’s not so bad and while they still think cleaning is fun(IT”S ALL IN THE WAY YOU LOOK AT IT)

I would greatly appreciate a custom picture chore chart. I currently manage 5 homes for developmentally disabled adults….One of the guys is required to follow a picture chore chart each day….and for the life of me I cannot find one anywhere!! I was so happy to come across your site…we try to keep our daily chores simple….making the bed, cleaning their bedroom, vaccuum, sweep & mop, dishwasher, cook, clean kitchen, clean bathroom, laundry. Any help with any of this would be so greatly appreciate…of course they don’t do all this in one day….and there are 4 individuals to each home….THANK YOU sooooo much Michele
