The Butterfly Room

About 10 years ago we split a large bedroom in our house into 2 bedroom’s to accomodate the arrival of our second child - a girl. Of course the room had to be pink and white, and for the past 10 years it has been. Since we made that room into the nursery, my son moved to a larger room on the other side of the house, our almost 10 year old took over his old room (you can see her Bombay Kids Betsy room here), and our youngest who is now 6 has been the occupant of the pink room.

Our 6 year old is pretty creative and very opinionated. She was adamant that her room would not be pink and it would instead be green. She has been on my case to get her room repainted for about 3 years and finally wore me down last week. I bought the wallpaper border and had the green in the border matched to custom paint. I have spent all weekend working on the room and the bulk of it is now done.

Butterfly and green girls bedroom redecorated

What do you think? The whole thing has cost me less than $100 to do. The wallpaper border was pretty inexpensive - only $7 a roll and I only needed 3 rolls. One gallon of green paint and one quart of white trim paint. The butterfly comforter is one we had on my other daughter’s bed before we redecorated her room and it was on clearance then.

Once I get all of her furniture back in the room, I will probably add a few more finishing touches - especially on the big wall next to her bed. If nothing else, I can say this has been a pretty productive weekend.

As a result of the (Not So) Great Flood at Crack House, my daughter’s room is getting a complete makeover too. She wants lime green paint and brightly colored accessories. We’ll see how it turns out!

I’m glad your youngest is happy now.

My daughter had wanted lime green, but I just couldn’t bring myself to it. I found the border first and had the green matched to it. Lucky for me, she has happy with her choice.

Can’t wait to see the finished product of your daughter’s new room when it is ready.

I just love all the different colours, patterns and textures that are available these days. I look back to our house when I was growing up and it was very plain, almost austere, though to be fair to my parents it was shortly after the war.
Having said all that, all the materials in the world can’t be a substitute for imagination and taste.
